Peter, now 11, was born with profound hearing loss. For years, his parents didn’t understand why he wasn’t responding to his name. By the time he reached school age, he had never said a word, and local schools turned him away, unable to support his needs.
When Peter’s family connected with Healing Hands Foundation through a neighbor, our team arranged a hearing assessment and provided Peter with his first formal communication tools: picture cards, visual routines, and most importantly, support in Tanzanian Sign Language. We worked with his local school to train teachers in basic signing and inclusive classroom techniques.
Peter now attends class every day, where he communicates confidently with peers and teachers using sign language. He recently stood on stage — with hands flying and eyes shining — to deliver a signed poem about the beauty of nature. His teacher shared, “We thought he had no voice. Healing Hands helped us realize we just hadn’t learned how to listen.”
